SPOILER ALERT!
I thought it was just the ethical lapses of the 80s that made Superman (particularly Superman II) so morally bankrupt until I saw Superman Returns. In Superman II, Superman gives up his powers so he can get some Lois nookie while the world is going to hand in a hellbasket. He eventually breaks his father's rules and fixes everything proving that the end justifies the means. In Superman Returns, he's faced with the consequenses of his one night stand with Lois: a super-son. When Lois asks if Superman intends to be involved in raising his son he replies coyly, "I'll be around." What does that teach our absent, deadbeat fathers? If Superman can steal the pookie and get away with it, so can they.
Contrarily, SpiderMan doesn't just show us a struggle between good and evil. It clearly illustrates right vs wrong. Without being preachy, this record breaking blockbuster movie series brings us such messages as "Sometimes you have to give up the things you want for the greater good" and "With great power comes great responsibility" and "It is always in your power to choose to do what's right."
